The standard is based upon the Social Model of Recovery Philosophy which emerged in California some 70 years ago, attracted science – based academic researchers over the following decades which, in turn, led to Social Model expanding nationwide in the late 60’s. Recovery – oriented housing founded on Social Model principles continues to be studied academically due to its proven effectiveness in promoting and sustaining long-term recovery. The primary mission of MARR is to promote this ethical and sustainable management of high-quality recovery residences throughout the State of Maine. Recovery residences are privately-owned homes or complexes that provide housing for adults with a substance use disorder or co-occurring disorder. They serve individuals that are currently receiving outpatient SUD services or are enrolled in recovery services. CCAPP has established a certification process for homes meeting CCAPP Recovery Residence Standards.

Residents are responsible for self-monitoring and staying accountable to each other. This is an example of what an Oxford House living environment might look like. All levels have a component of peer support, and each ascending level provides more structure and staff assistance than the one below.

By embracing nationally recognized standards for the operation of recovery residences, we are helping to raise the bar on the level of service and care provided through recovery residences throughout Alabama. “What we know about addictions recovery is that it’s best done in the community,” Sanders says. “In my view, the residential setting—any of the levels of recovery residence—is really about how you develop a healthy family life and environment. We don’t get better in isolation. We grow and heal with others. The advantage is a healing environment to grow.”

Residents have a lot of flexibility but also a great deal of personal responsibility and accountability. Residents participate in a variety of recovery-based and recreational activities, as well as attend 12-step meetings and group outings on evenings and weekends. At that time, insurance and other barriers were impacting individuals’ treatment options. Project HOME is on the front lines of addressing one of the most devastating crises in the nation – our opioid epidemic. We are creating a meaningful recovery effort that will provide much needed support and permanent housing focused on recovery. This is one of the ways Project HOME will empower adults to break the cycle of homelessness while addressing the opioid crisis and the impact addiction has on the homeless community. Each level implements the social model to varying degrees and offers distinctly different service intensities. Legislators to adopt mandates to protect both individuals in recovery, as well as ethical housing providers.

The single most important question to ask is, “Is this house MARR certified, and if not, why not?”

These homes should provide safe places for individuals to live temporarily as they continue to work their programs. Residents seek the appropriate level of outpatient care from facilities within the community and have, ideally, already participated in inpatient care if necessary. Sanders founded Hope Homes, an organization that provides recovery residences at varying levels to individuals in Atlanta; Charlotte, NC; and Nashville. However, until recently, the quality of those residences was difficult to judge from the outside.

Knowing that you’re not alone, that you have connections with people who understand and can help you during the rough patches life brings, is a proven way to support sobriety. CCAPP endorses the concept of sober living and the establishment of Recovery Residences. Current research shows that the longer a person is exposed to and part of a sober community, the better the chances are for long-term recovery. Oxford Houses are a specific type of recovery residence with a manualized set of rules and expectations.

Safe, Structured, and Affordable Sober Living

National organizations have contributed significant and valuable work in developing policies, practices, and guidance to improve recovery housing as an integral model of care. Additionally, going to a home that is less than reputable can mean a significant setback to recovery. Way states that many individuals looking for recovery residences haven’t previously known what to look for, what to ask, and what’s good or not good in a home. They lacked a clear understanding of what a recovery residence is and, therefore, what expectations they should have for one. As such, ORH creates and maintains standards of excellence for recovery housing in Ohio that meet expectations of NARR, and it provides opportunities for peer reviews that regularly document an ongoing commitment to ORH quality standards.

An opportunity for students in recovery to access enhanced community support while pursuing an active, on-campus life and academic experience. Level 4 residences are state-licensed treatment providers who blend the “Medical Model” and” Social Model” to create a relatively more supportive environment for the person in recovery.
